Statement from the SJFF Regarding Recent Events in Israel

The Sacramento Jewish Film Festival Stands with Israel

The Sacramento Jewish Film Festival stands in solidarity with the people of Israel in the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks by Hamas on October 7. We condemn these acts of violence and terror against the State of Israel in the strongest possible terms.

We support Israel’s right to exist and its responsibility to defend its people against terrorism and other security threats. We stand in solidarity with the Israeli people as they defend themselves.

Our thoughts are with all those in the Israeli film community who have been impacted by these horrific terrorist attacks.

Filmmaker Yahav Winner ("The Boy," winner best cinematography at TSIFF) was killed by Hamas terrorists after bravely confronting terrorists who invaded his home during the attack on his village, Kfar Aza, in the South of Israel. Winner stalled the attackers in order to rescue his wife, Shaylee Atary, a filmmaker as well, and his 1-month old daughter, Shaya. Shaylee and Shaya are now safe in a hospital. After hiding for 26 hours with no water or food, they were evacuated by Israeli Defense Forces. Atary is known for her recent film "Single Light," which deals with sexual assault and just premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival two weeks ago.

Lior Waitzman, the sound editor for many films including “Love in Suspenders,” which we presented in 2020, was murdered by Hamas terrorists while biking near his home. Lior leaves behind a wife and son.

The son of film producer Osnat Trabelsi was also sadly murdered. Osnat is known for producing documentary films on political topics, especially those involving Palestine, the Mizrahi experience in Israel, women's issues, colonialism, racism, and more; and for melding her business with activism, promoting filmmaking in the geographical and social periphery of Israel, and creating access to Palestinian cinema.

We hope for the safe return of all hostages to their families and for a just and peaceful resolution to this terrible violence. This is the time when we all stand united in support of Israel.
